Assessing Quality of Care in Hospitals Approved by Medicare: Comparing Lenox Hill Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, and NYU Langone Hospitals in New York
The Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services provides regularly updated data on the quality of care provided by the hospitals certified by it nationally, from the perspective of the patients. This is the Medicare Hospital Compare. The survey data compares the quality of care in each hospital as gauged by the consumers, against a state and national average (Data.gov., 2019; Medicare.gov., 2019). This data is aimed at consumption by both healthcare professionals and the general public. This is because it essentially provides objective views and experiences of patients on the level of care offered at Medicare-certified hospitals across the United States of America (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2019). The three variables identified for comparison are (i) patients’ experiences, (ii) payment and value of care, and (iii) timely and effective care. Three hospitals used for comparison are Lenox Hill, Mount Sinai, and NYU Langone Hospitals; all within 5.5 miles of 10003 New York (NY). On (i), patients who responded that they “Always” got assistance the moment they asked for it were 64% (Lenox Hill), 57% (Mt. Sinai), and 66% (NYU Langone). The NY state average for this is 63% while nationally it’s 70%. On (ii), value of care in death rate for heart attack patients was the same as the national benchmark for all three hospitals. Lastly on (iii), the percentage of those who received correct treatment and care for sepsis were 63%, 41%, and 77% respectively. This is against a state and national average of 51% and 55% respectively (Medicare.gov., 2019). These results show that two of the hospitals compare favorably with both the state and national expectations on the quality of care, except Mount Sinai Hospital. Nurses in Mt. Sinai therefore need to review their standard of care and make adjustments accordingly for better outcomes. In my own agency, discrepancies in data are met by instant review of our nursing process.
