Changing the Landscape of Healthcare Essay
Healthcare quality management class reflection
As a student, the class on healthcare quality management was very informative, particularly with regards to my understand of care in terms of expectations and experiences. It provided me with an introduction to the skills and knowledge needed to lead quality improvement initiatives at the macro and micro levels. The classwork explored the foundations of healthcare quality and the science underlying selection of effective measures and quality design and improvement. Also, it introduced tools and models to address quality improvement challenges and facilitated learning strategies to lead a change culture. To be more precise, I now understand healthcare quality to be concerned with ensuring an accessible, affordable and safe system of care. Changing the Landscape of Healthcare Essay

This is an evolution from my previous understanding of healthcare quality as simply using available resources to meet the needs of patients and their families. I now understand that healthcare quality is concerned with equipping resources in the health care environment (such as medical staff, facilities and settings) with the tools that allow them to offer exceptional care while preventing harm. In addition, it is concerned with ensuring that medical personnel are trained to prevent harm using evidence-based resources and tools to track adverse events, and use that knowledge to generate increased positive outcomes. Besides that, the classwork has made me aware that ensuring healthcare quality is critical and should be a primary focus to include taking a global view of patient safety and linking healthcare stakeholder to resources and research. In fact, I now know that improving healthcare quality is best addressed through provider and patient advocacy to empower all stakeholders to make changes in the healthcare system to save lives, lower costs and improve outcomes (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2016) It is difficult to identify gaps in my skills and knowledge with regards to the class, only because I feel that I have learned much. I feel that I have largely expanded my skills and knowledge, but I need to be prepared to take the lead in healthcare quality management initiatives. I think it would be useful to be mentored by others and gain proficiency before I can take the lead in such projects. Overall, the class was an informative experience.
