Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus. It is the leading cause of liver failure, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The modes of transmission are through direct contact with blood, semen, and other body fluids (Seto, et al, 2018). Hepatitis B infection is a common hospital-acquired infection traditionally associated with blood transfusion, inappropriate waste segregation, and disposal. For example, accidental needle sticks and direct contact with the patient’s body fluid. At the community level, the modes of transmission are unprotected sexual contact with an infected person, sharing needles among the drug users, and mother-to-child during breastfeeding. In this situation, the outcome definition is to reduce the rate of new infections and mortalities associated with hepatitis in the hospital and the community. This goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and within a time frame. Planning interventions carefully involves listing the possible methods that would benefit the groups of people at risk with the readily available resources. Then, start small by using a control group that is small and manageable to test and learn how the intervention works. The small group’s feedback enables one to know the progress they are making towards achieving the goal. Scaling of the intervention is the fourth step which involves determining the effectiveness and the cost of intervention. Monitoring the progress of the intervention helps to know its efficiency and effectiveness in reducing mortalities and morbidities. Sharing the best practice by the various departmental representatives after the study involves training the staff on the different ways to prevent spread.
