Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards
Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards
The National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards (CLAS) support healthcare quality improvement and equity as well as the elimination of healthcare disparities. In order to optimize our practice in the inpatient adult and child psychiatry, my peers refer to these standards and apply them in multiple situations. For instance, we encounter mental disorder patients from diverse backgrounds whose healthcare access is challenged by language barriers. Through communication and assistance knowledge from the CLAS, we provide language assistance to patients with little knowledge of English language as well as assist in areas of other communication needs (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d). This facilitates quick and timely access of medical services at no extra cost.

Moreover, we provide age-conscious assistance to the inpatient psychiatry patients (American Nurses Association, 2015). This is achieved through the provision of easy-to-understand multimedia and print materials as well as the sign languages that are effective for all age groups. Inpatient adults and children are separated, monitored and treated depending on their age and individual mental needs. Furthermore, we deliver culturally competent services that respect the age, background, beliefs and practices of the people through engagement of the patients in their treatment plans. My organization provides quality and equitable healthcare services particularly in the psychiatric inpatient department. However, cultural competence can be improved through the incorporation of Governance, leadership and Workforce course of action. This strategy supports the improvement of effective governance and leadership in the organization and upholds the application of CLAS standards to promote accountability, equity, quality. It also creates awareness on the cultural needs of the population and the workforce thus creating a culturally competent healthcare setting (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d). In addition, good leadership recognizes the diversity of the healthcare system with regard to health practices and beliefs and enhances cultural accommodation.
