Views on teaching
The video presents an opinion piece by Sir. Ken Robinson, offered on September, 2010, at The Blue School, New York City. In the video, the Sir. Ken expresses his views on the art of teaching. He claims that education is a personal process and that good teachers are aware of this fact and try to personalize the teaching process so as to engage learners. He goes on to indicate that personalizing the learning process links education to personal learner interests so as to be motivated to learn. He further adds that teachers can leverage technology to engage learners and customize the teaching process so that education is optimized. In addition, he indicates that great teachers must have the capacity to apply their full complement and skills, and adapt the teaching and learning process to the specific learners’ needs, knowing what is appropriate at a particular time and place (Robinson, 2012). The video offers thought provoking views on teaching, acknowledging that each learner is unique and responds differently to the different teaching/learning approaches, and that technology can be leveraged in the teaching/learning process. The ideas presented in the video draw attention to the notion that each student has the capacity to excel as long as the right personalized teaching/learning approach that draws their interest is applied. This notion acknowledges the existence of diversity at every level. Also, it emphasizes the need for teachers to be aware of the diversity by customizing curriculums so that learners acquire the core concepts in a manner that sparks their imagination while drawing their interests. Besides that, the video correctly draws attention to the need to integrated technology within the learning environment. This is important since technology has become a part of everyday life and it is not hard to accept that it can find use within the education environment (Billings & Halstead, 2016; Iwasiw, Andrusyszyn & Goldenberg, 2019). Overall, the article is a useful tool for convincing teachers to apply customized and personalized teaching approaches.
