Data Collection Assignment Paper
The problem has been identified as police brutality as a problem in law enforcement with focus on illegal excessive or unwarranted use of force against members of the public. The issue of concern includes all forms of mistreatment that range from verbal abuse to intimidation, false arrest, harassment, murder, torture, mayhem, battery and assault, among other forms of abuse. The problem identification was informed by two sources of data. The first source of data is Edwards, Lee and Esposito (2018), a research article that reports on some of the key demographics noted for populations involved in police brutality. It notes that police brutality is a leading cause of mortality among Black populations in the USA with 1 out of 1,000 of them expected to die from this cause. Data Collection Assignment Paper

The analysis specifically noted that young adults (20 to 35 years of age) are most vulnerable. It concludes that although the risk of death is significantly higher for Blacks, Latino, American Indian and Alaska Native populations also report significantly high risks when compared to White populations. Mapping Police Violence (2019) adds to the discussion by noting that approximately 1,164 people were killed by police in 2018, up from 1,147 reported in 2017. The most significant aspect of the statistics is that despite Blacks being only 13% of the USA population, they account for 25% of the deaths with 30% of them being unarmed. The statistics further indicate that demographics affect the possibility of police brutality, with Black three times to be victims. Also, it notes that 99% of the cases involving police brutality have not seen the police involved convicted of a crime. The two sources of data show that police brutality is an issue of concern since it points to inequality and systemic failures that target specific demographics. Given this awareness about the problem, it is not surprising to explore the problem and possible solutions.
