ISBN: 9781305087309.Thanks (Emily) We have discussed in great depth how to work through conflict when it arises within a group. Corey et al. (2014) shares the following: “Conflict is a reality in many groups, yet conflict typically is a source of anxiety for group leaders” (Corey et al., 2014, p. 91). This is an important point to discuss. If conflict is a reality in most group sessions and leaders are fearful of handling conflict within their group, leaders need to be more prepared and equipped so that they feel confident in handling conflict when it arises within a group counseling session. Forsyth (2014) defines conflict as: “Disagreement, discord, and friction that occur when the actions or beliefs or one or more members of the group are unacceptable to and resisted by one or more of the other group members” (Forsyth, 2014, p. 434). It is important for a group leader to first know what conflict is and what it consists of so they as the leader know how to approach and address the conflict when it arises within their group. When a leader feels like he or she is prepared to address conflict within their group as it comes, it will help ease the tension of having conflict within the group itself. Corey et al. (2014) shares, “When conflict occurs, there is a chance for members to encounter one another on an honest level. The manner in which conflict is dealt with will determine whether a group gets stuck or whether interactions among members deepen” (Corey et al., 2014, p. 91). When a leader is prepared for conflict that may arise, they have the opportunity to take the group to a deeper level as they work through conflict and hard things.
