Thesis: The US should ban the wearing of Muslim headdress in public places.
Issue Summary
Perhaps no piece of clothing is more controversial these days than the headscarf that many Muslim women wear. There are actually various types of scarves and covering that Muslim women wear, variously called the hijab, niqab, chadour, boushiya, or burqa, which range from resting over the hair to covering the whole face except the eyes. Some Western European countries have bans, partial bans, and pending laws regarding the wearing of these items, and the reaction against these headdresses has led to attempts to ban the wearing of any religious symbol in some public areas. In some Muslim countries, the headdress is likewise controversial. Syria had a ban on the headdress until early 2011, Turkey has banned them, and Moroccan women risk public censure for wearing it. Secular governments and non-Muslim populations view the headdress as a form of oppression, a symbol against women’s rights. Western European countries fear the headdress as a symbol that Muslim immigrants refuse to accept the cultures of their host countries. Proponents of the headdress, including many Muslim women, argue that the headdress is a cultural and personal matter, not a religious one. They also argue that banning the headdress violates their rights.
