How It Feels Like to Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome
I vividly remember how embarrassing it was making noises at the wrong place. It was at this particular time when I attended a meeting at a local church. Before the meeting, I was feeling bloated with mild abdominal pains that were on and off. I had experienced alternating episodes of constipation and diarrhea the previous night. I thought I would feel relieved after some time. Unfortunately, during the meeting, I encountered the first bowel noises followed by high-pitched noises of a deflating balloon. My face and body start flushing with a thin sweat streaking down my thighs. At this particular moment, I pretended like nothing is happening to me. I could feel my stomach rumbling and full of gas.
Changes I Would Make In My Diet Specifically For IBS
Edsill, (2020) I would take more diet that is rich in fiber and fiber supplementation to improve the symptoms of diarrhea and constipation. Take more water after meals to prevent constipation. Avoid legumes, lactose, and fructose to reduce abdominal bloating. Coffee and other food products with caffeine increase anxiety that causes abdominal bloating and diarrhea. Take a gluten-free and fermentable oligosaccharide low diet to reduce the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. According to (Hosadurg, et al 2019) irritable bowel syndrome is a group of functional gastrointestinal disorders. It is treated with dietary changes, medications, probiotics, and counseling.
How Would You Feel? The feeling comes when you least expect it. Heat sears the intestines, and you have to go to the bathroom NOW. As you get up from your office chair to move down the hall to the bathroom, the rush is more urgent. You pause, hoping that if you stop walking, you can squeeze down and hold the urge a moment. But you cannot. Stool begins to gush from your body. Now you hurry to the bathroom, swing the door open to the toilet. (Thank goodness there is no one waiting!) You pull you clothes away, lower yourself to the toilet, and your flow continues. There is release and relief. Your clothes are a mess. You wipe, wash, flush two or three times, and pray that on one comes into the restroom to see you. You are so glad to see that none of your outer clothing is spoiled. You wrap your now-rinsed underwear in paper towels, go back to your office, and put the paper towels in a plastic bag and seal it. You are so embarrassed but so glad that you have a change of underwear with you. This is not the first time, and you have learned to be prepared. You are learning not to feel shame.
