The formal structure of Uvalde Memorial hospital is a structure where roles of staff are specifically defined. The organization’s formal structure is a combination of matrix and bureaucratic structure. In the organization, every nursing staff is responsible for his/her work but directly communicate with one another and their seniors. Marquis and Huston, (2017) argue matrix, structure, organizational employees report to departmental managers and have numerous bosses, while the bureaucratic organizational structure is top-down hierarchy, whereby communication flows from the top going down. In Uvalde memorial hospital, the nursing staff report to departmental heads who in turn reports to nursing supervisors. How decisions are made within the organization
Uvalde memorial hospital is a formal, centralized organization. All processes and decisions are strictly handled at the executive or top level. Even decisions concerning daily processes and operations are usually decided by executives at the upper level. Decisions and processes in the medical-surgical unit are delegated to the head of the unit. Griffin et al (2016) claim that centralized decision making, employees and managers low in the hierarchy have limited capacity to make decisions on hospital’s operations and processes of an organization and can hardly execute novel processes without approval from the top management. The influence of formal and informal leadership on decision making
Both formal and formal leadership can exist in a healthcare organization and influence decision making of followers. According to Dahlkemper (2017), formal leadership is exercised by a nurse appointed to an official position such as charge nurse, nurse manager or nurse supervisor, and offer authority by the organization to act. Informal leadership is practiced by a person without an appointed or official power to act but has the capability of influencing others within the workgroup. The informal leader in the medical-surgical unit may have substantial power and can influence other staff in the unit to make decisions that can considerably influence the effectiveness and efficiency of workflow, problem-solving and goal setting. Through legitimate power, a formal leader can influence members of staff, whose are obliged to accept this influence.
