Change Theory

According to Kurt Lewin, change has three classic steps; unfreezing, changing, and refreezing. This theory provides a high-level approach to improvement and gives the managers a framework to implement a change effort. The theory ensures there are radical innovations, minimal disruptions of the structure operations, and permanent adoption of the amendment. Unfreezing means ready to change For example, in an organization, people are moving in the same direction but are not doing the right thing and there is no one to question their legitimacy (Hussain, et al, 2018). During the unfreezing period, the staff unlearns their old habits and gains the perspective of their day to day activities. The stage of change implementation allows the staff to gain efficiency and take upon the new task and responsibilities. Refreezing means that the change will be made permanent. Application Of The Nursing Process

Change theory can be applied in nursing practice during the implantation of evidence-based practices. For example, the hand wash technique before and after handling a patient has been shown to reduce the incidences of hospital-acquired infections. The change theory can be applied by; unfreezing stage teaches healthcare professionals the proper procedure of washing hands with soap and running water. The change implementation stage enables the care provider to adopt the new practice in their daily hospital activities. The refreezing stage allows the staff to reinforce the practice of handwashing while the organization ensures a continuous supply of soap and running water.
