Continuous quality improvement is a process that focuses on activities that are responsive to the needs of the community by improving population health (Wong, & Headrick, 2021). It is a gradual process and an ongoing effort towards achieving measurable improvements in the efficiency, effectiveness, performance, accountability, and outcomes in an organization. Process measures that determine quality improvement can be preventive care or curative care. For example, preventive care may indicate the percentage of the population receiving preventive services such as immunizations. Curative care may indicate the number of diabetic patients who have their blood sugar tested and are well controlled.

Preventive Care

Preventive healthcare service stops the occurrence of a disease process to reduce the burden of disease and the associated risk factors (Farraye, et al, 2017). Provision of preventive healthcare services is a process measure in continuous quality improvement. For example, screening for breast cancer among all women of reproductive age reduces the number of breast cancer and the treatment cost. Curative Care

Curative services are the activities or procedures performed to promote recovery from an illness, injury, or impairment. For example, when diabetic patients have well-controlled blood sugars and are on a strict diet, it is an indication of continuous quality improvement in the clinic. Monitoring CQI promotes a healthy population and reduces the cost of treating chronic illnesses.

Both curative and preventive services are the process measures that monitor quality improvement in a healthcare department. Data is collected through interviewing the patients in the wards and outpatient clinics. Success of the process measure is determined by the number of patients receiving or seeking curative preventive services. Accurate data collection determines the success of the monitoring of continuous quality improvement. To reduce the cost and the time spent on data collection and monitoring the curative services, it is necessary to install an electronic health recording system that monitors the number of patients receiving services, treatment given, and follow-up. Healthcare-associated infection is an outcome measure to be used to monitor continuous quality improvement. The prevalence of HAI’s translates the quality of safety and care accorded to a patient while in the hospital. Increased cases of HAI’s are an indication of poor quality of care in terms of hygiene, aseptic procedures, and prophylaxis drug choice. Continuous reduction in cases of HAI’s indicates a continuous quality improvement in the care given.

Outcome measure is determined through quantitative data analysis. The method of data collection involves interviewing the infection control practitioners, nurses, and clinicians working at the various departments. Reviewing daily reports and nursing cardex provides continuous and consistent data about the new cases of healthcare-associated infections. The prevalence of healthcare-associated infections is measured by the number of new cases divided by the total number of patients receiving treatment, multiplied by 100. For example, let’s say new cases of healthcare-associated infections in a clinic are 30 in one month. The total number of patients who received treatment is 600 in one month. The prevalence rate is 2% for the HAI’s. The success rate of the outcome measure is determined by consistent documentation of data and reporting to the infection control department to ensure continuous quality improvement. Data collection is an extraneous and expensive activity. To reduce on cost and save on time spent on data collection, it is appropriate to adopt the electronic heath recording system to produce accurate consistent data that monitors CQI.
