Patient Involvement In Healthcare Decision Making

Patient participation in making healthcare decisions entails involving patients in expressing their opinions. It is also known as shared decision making where the patients express their emotions, feelings, signs, and acceptance of the healthcare instructions. Shared decision-making has increased in the current society due to the dynamics in culture and technology. Other factors that influenced patient participation in decision making are doctor-patient relationship, recognition of patient’s knowledge, allocation of sufficient time for participation, and previous experiences in healthcare services (Härter, et al, 2017). Shared decision-making empowers patients and improves patient services and health outcomes. Patient involvement in decision-making is an ethical principle known as autonomy (Johnson, et al, 2018). Patients make decisions about their health status when they are well informed. Patient Involvement in Healthcare Decision Making Essay

My Experience In Patient Involvement In Healthcare Decision Making

During my practice at the diabetes clinic, I had an encounter with 45 years old male patient newly diagnosed with type two diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. As the healthcare provider, I took the patient through the risk factors and causes of type two diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. The patient tends to understand the topic well and admits to having made mistakes like physical inactivity, a sedentary lifestyle, and smoking tobacco. He also explains that he experiences alternating episodes of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. He also ignored his family history of having diabetes mellitus (his father and mother have type two diabetes mellitus). I advised on treatment methods such as oral hypoglycemic, physical exercise, and a healthy diet (Blaslov, et al, 2017). The patient denied taking oral hypoglycemic drugs and opted to modify his lifestyle. In this case, I involved the patient in making a decision based on his current illness and past experiences in medical illness. During the subsequent visits, the patient’s condition improved gradually without taking medication because there was willingness in complying with lifestyle modification. According to Wieringa, et al, (2019) a decision aid effectively involved patients with type two diabetes mellitus in decision about their medication but did not improve in adherence of HbA(1c) levels.
