The teachers, being the participants in the workshop, are one of the primary stakeholders. It is their experience with the workshop that will influence others to participate or not. From their perspective, the workshop will have been successful if they are able to apply what they have learned to their teaching. After the workshop, it is important to evaluate if:

  1. The teachers found the workshop useful and are more comfortable in bringing their class outdoors.

  1. Students feel comfortable being outdoors with their classroom.
  2. Teachers and students are communicating outdoor learning experiences with parents through face-to-face interactions or class apps such as Seesaw and Instagram.

The following table will look at the different stakeholders along with the criteria identified for each group to determine whether or not the workshop is a success. It will also determine an appropriate evaluation method for the different criteria and why it is best suited.

 

The Influence of Power Dynamics on Evaluation

While the different stakeholders have different views about whether or not a program is successful, they all come together in wanting it to be something that the students benefit from. This perspective can be a good route in navigating the different points of view of the various stakeholders. The teachers, the Elders, and the parents all want to see students learning in a safe and interactive environment. While the school division and the school administrators may need to look at this workshop from a financial perspective, they also want to see the students thriving in their learning. By focusing the success of the workshop on what the teachers are able to bring back to their students, there will be more common ground in evaluating the program.

Summary of what the project is about

The workshop being planned is a two-day outdoor education workshop directed towards elementary schools in the Seven districts School Division. This year, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a push in the school division towards outdoor education as a means of keeping students distanced and having proper air circulation. This workshop aims at helping elementary teachers understand the options that are available when they bring their students outside. It will include resources that are available through the division along with clear connections to the kindergarten to grade five curricula, connections to other divisional priorities such as Indigenous perspectives, and helpful suggestions to successfully get teachers and their students outdoors.

Being an employee of the Seven District School Division and a teacher in one of their elementary schools, I already have an understanding of the learner group and will begin with an informal assessment to create a learner group profile in order to determine the learning needs. In this assessment I will include strategies to help determine what the targeted group may already know about outdoor education and aim to discover what would be most helpful for them to feel confident in bringing their students outside.
