Professional and ethical practices are the pillars that safeguard the welfare of clients and clinicians. Ethical and professional leaders can define and align their values. They hire people with the same values and lead by example. They promote open communication and care for others. However, professional and ethical leadership is cultivated over some time by the nature and sources of values, beliefs, and ethical perspectives through professional and personal experiences. Primary Influences
Primary influences are the environmental, situational, or hereditary experiences in childhood and adulthood that influence behavior or personality (Nazarian, et al, 2017). I was brought up in a disciplined environment with strict parents who strongly upheld the morals and values of society. This environment taught me kindness, humility, and having a compassionate, sympathetic, and generous behavior. My parents and elder folks believe in doing what is good to others despite their background or first impression. My parents gave us direction, imposed rules, set limits, and disciplined my siblings and me when growing up. They also followed through with consequences and held us accountable for any bad behavior. I learned how to become responsible for my actions and correcting my mistakes without blaming others. I grew up avoiding deliberate errors that would hurt others. My principle has been to treat people the same way I would like to.
At some point in my growing up, my parents transferred from working in a city to rural areas. The new environment was a poverty-stricken society with a scarcity of food and water. We had visitors knocking at our door, often begging for food or water. This experience taught me to how to have compassion and kindness towards other people. Their health-seeking behavior was poor because of the lack of primary healthcare facilities surrounding us. They fell ill and suffered chronic diseases without treatment. Other families lost their loved ones because they could not afford health care services. With time I learned how to accommodate and interact with them despite their different economic and social status. This experience modeled my professional and practice ethics. I have learned what compassion, kindness, and veracity mean to people, despite their economic background. As an ER nurse, I have practiced the values and beliefs that I learned in my childhood and adulthood. They are social justice, doing what is good to other people, and respecting people for who they are. Professional Platform for Ethics and Leadership Paper
Ethical Principles That Influence My Personality And Professionalism
Ethics are the values that govern a person’s conduct of an activity or behavior. My fundamental values stand a strong foundation of ethical behavior, driven beyond the patient’s race, economic status, social status, or cultural background (Huda, M. 2019). My knowledge and professional values are the standards that offer high quality and safe ethical care. My perspective on personal and professional values affects patient care and decision-making. The values and ethical principles have increased my self-awareness, clarification of values and beliefs, and exploration of feelings. Ethical principles that influence my personality and professionalism include justice and fairness, beneficence, respect for autonomy, non-maleficence, fidelity, accountability, veracity, and accountability (Huda, M. 2019).
The principle of justice and fairness enables me as an ER nurse to be fair and just to all the patients when distributing care. It helps me as a nurse to treat all patients equally despite their shortcomings or background. Beneficence is the art of doing what is good to all patients. It has enabled me to do what is right while caring for the patient. Non-maleficence means that a care provider should not harm the patient either intentional or unintentional. As an ER nurse, this helps me understand that all patients have the right to protection against medical errors, thus improving my safe practice skills. Accountability is accepting responsibility for one’s actions. It has helped me face the personal and professional consequences that occur during the practice. It also keeps me on my toes to deliver high-quality care to all patients. Veracity is being truthful to my patients. Nurses ought to have habitual truthfulness to the patients and colleagues during their practice. This principle of being truthful during my practice has created reduced anxiety, creating rapport and trust with the patient. Patient autonomy is the principle that entitles the patients to know all about their treatment options and have the right to make decisions regarding healthcare based on their personal beliefs (Huda, M. 2019). The patients have the right to decline treatment or medication. This principle has helped me encourage the patients to make decisions without judgments.
Ethical Practice Of Professional Nursing
According to Clark, C. M. (2017), professional ethics in nursing protects patients and gives nurses the guidance they need to develop a healthy society. Professional ethics are stimulated by the code of conduct. The code of conduct dictates the professional duties and responsibilities that maintain and support the societal goal of the nursing. They are personal and professional commitment which involves self-respect, self-evaluation, and the relationship with other nurses and patients. Nurses should provide services effectively, competently, and in a manner that will ensure patient safety. Ethical practices as a nursing officer have designed me into a competent nurse professionally and ethically. Professional Platform for Ethics and Leadership Paper
Ethical Leadership And Professional Development Plan
Ethical leadership is a leadership system directed by the respect of values and beliefs of rights and dignity for others. It is associated with the concept of trust, love, honesty, charisma, consideration, and fairness (Somprach, et al, 2017). All leaders want to follow a strict and moral compass to recognize the direction. Therefore, they should stand and know what they stand for and understand their values. A professional development plan is a document that contains a set of goals, objectives, required skills, and competency development that staff will need to accomplish to have continuous improvement in career development. Ethical leadership and professional development plan consistently demonstrate and promote behavior the respects the rights of others.
Ethical leadership and professional development plan create an environment that upholds an ethical culture for all their clients, employees, and investors. Ethical leadership and professional plan regard justice and fairness for all and eliminate bias treatment based on gender, nationality, or ethnicity. It respects other team members by listening compassionately, valuing diverse contributions and opposing viewpoints (Somprach, et al, 2017). They uphold transparency despite the unpopularity of the facts because they understand that transparency empowers and breeds trust to make decisions with the information they need. They have humane behavior in their act of kindness. It focuses on team building that enables them to make genuine efforts to achieve objectives that benefits the entire organization. It makes value-driven decisions that are in alignment with the overall organizational values. Ethical leadership and professional development plan is the model that has streamlined competency in the profession of nursing. Professional Platform for Ethics and Leadership Paper
