Short-Term and Long-Term Professional Goals as a Nurse Practitioner.
Introduction
The nurse practitioner (NP) whose full title is certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP) or advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) is a highly educated professional trained to offer not only preventive but also curative health care to the community. One must possess a postgraduate degree of a masters or PhD to be a NP (2U, Inc., 2018; ANCC, n.d.). NPs investigate, diagnose, and treat patients side-by-side with physicians and only refer for specialist care when necessary. This makes the NP particularly important in primary health care or PHC. Personal Professional Goals as a Nurse Practitioner
In the short term my professional goal as a NP is to make use of evidence-based practice (EBP) and nursing knowledge I have acquired to provide holistic and wide-ranging health care with compassion. The goal is to provide this much-needed care to my grassroots marginalised minority community without discrimination based on race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation and so on. I intend to provide this all-encompassing health care at the primary level for the benefit of the needy grassroots population. This is PHC, which is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the vehicle for achieving health for all. Short-Term and Long-Term Professional Goals as a Nurse Practitioner. The United States is lagging behind in this and my goal is thus to change this for my people (Phillips Jr. & Bazemore, 2010). I’ll educate and create awareness on lifestyle diseases like diabetes and heart disease (prevention), treat, and counsel my minority community. This goal will be made easier by having full practice authority as a NP without state restrictions (Peterson, 2017). My long-term goal therefore will be to bring socio-cultural change in how healthcare is viewed in my community. Also, I’ll avail my expertise for not only local use, but also internationally. Conclusion
Being a NP is very rewarding in that one receives the highest level of nursing and medical training, after which this knowledge and expertise is put to good use in helping the local community. This is primary health care. My ultimate goal therefore is to do this to my community as a way of giving back, while still maintaining global availability if duty calls.
