Unlike New Jersey where PMHNPs are allowed to practice independently in diagnosing and treating patients, Pennsylvania state regulations do not grant PMHNPs full practice authority. Stokowski (2018) notes that nurse practitioners in Pennsylvania diagnose, treat, undertake diagnostic tests and order medications in accordance to a collaborative pact with a licensed medical doctor. The validity of the credential is five years and the credential can be used by maintenance of practice licensure and completion of renewal requirements for renewal of certification (American Nurses Credentialing Center, 2018).
A PMHNP considering relocate licensure to another state needs to check with state’s regulations and statutes that govern psychiatric mental health nursing before undertaking the role. Rice and Moller (2017) argue that statutes of several states have considerable penalties for starting practice before obtaining licenses of the individual state. Numerous states engage in compact designations, which make relocation of a registered nurse simpler, but restrict the duration a person can practice without first making an application for the individual state license (Rice & Moller, 2017).
A checklist for passing the national certification examination
Prior to starting the process of applying for the ANCC certification exam, I will have completed a post-graduate degree in psychiatric mental health nursing.
