Thanks(shola) Greeting Everyone, I am Shola Walker hailing from Augusta, Georgia. I am exciting about taking this class with all of you. I am currently traveling around this great world enjoying a much needed vacation. Currently, the universe has not pulled me towards a specific specialization I am interested in a few of them. I am continuing my research on which specializations that God directs me to based on life lessons and educational instructions has taught me. I am currently a law enforcement officer and in my opinion, I do not think there is enough done for those individuals that we identify need additional help/services. This feeling has weighed on my heart heavily which pushed me towards the a more counselor / mentor approach at my job. My faith played a big part in this because being in law enforcement I see a lot. Prayer has really gotten me through many decisions that I needed in order to make decisions that ultimately could change the individual’s life. Something like this, I never want to take for granted because of my own personal beliefs and/or biases. After that the answer was clear, law enforcement officer came easy for me because I believe in fair and impartial treatment, but that felt like work, but helping, assisting and talking to people did not feel like a job and at the end of the day, the results were evident. After reading this week’s assignment, I consider the work of Jane Addams one of the most important historical events in the history of the human services profession. Not taking away from President Roosevelt and the 13 acts he passed within his first 100 days in office, but Addams cause was for all people, no matter race, color, worthy vs. unworthy, and which removed boundaries needed for change. She also worked alongside African American reformers confront racial equality and implemented settlement homes in America. This was happening in the late 1800s where woman was seen as inferior to males. I can only imagine the roadblocks and setbacks she had to encounter in order to see this contribution full-filled. As we look around, there are still similarities to Ms.Addams settlement houses concept in America. Not all may have the same mission statement or goals, but hopefully the vision coincides with one another. Truly speaking, women activists are truly remarkable to me for the simple fact is all the challenges that they face from all individuals, more so from other females. It takes courage and bravery to continue to pursue a cause that individuals attempt to “shutdown” because they do not understand your cause. If people did not stand up for what they believed in, there is no telling where America would be right now.
