Work Overload And Nursing Burnout Due Paper

Work Overload

Heavy workload is a huge problem for the American healthcare system. Nurses in the United States of America experience high work overload because of; the increasing demand for nurses, inadequate supply of nurses, reduced staffing and increased over time, and reduction in inpatient length of stay (Olaniyan, O. A. 2020). Nursing demand has drastically increased due to the increase in population aging. In the United States of America, the population over 65 years with chronic illnesses is growing annually hence increasing the health-seeking behavior and demand for nurses. The supply of nurses does not meet the desired demand due to inadequate training facilities and high demand for nursing education. The shortage of nursing and increased work demand leads to work overload. Most hospitals reduced the number of nurses due to increased healthcare costs. It causes understaffing and eventually leads to work overload due to the increased work demand Olaniyan, O. A. 2020). An increase in healthcare costs leads to a reduction of hospital stays by most health organizations. The outcome is under-treatment and increased risks of hospital readmissions. Therefore, it eventually increases patient turnover in hospitals, thus increasing the nursing workload. Work overload in nursing compromises patient safety and nursing job satisfaction. High nursing work overload harms patient outcomes. Work Overload And Nursing Burnout Due Paper

Nursing Burnout

Nursing burnout is the state of physical, mental, emotional, and psychological exhaustion caused by work-related stress. Common causes of nursing burnout are; long working hours, sleep deprivation, the strain of taking care of patients with chronic illnesses, and the pressure to quick-decision making. Nursing burnout has impaired attention, executive attention, and memory function that decreases their recall and attention (Adhikari KC, M. 2021). It increases the risk of making medical errors and hence compromising patient safety. In a cross-sectional survey carried out in 2018, the majority of the nurses were reported to have left employment due to burnout. Predictors of burnout described in this study are low schedule flexibility, low autonomy, negative physician-nurse relationship, poor team relationship, poor leadership, and toxic work environment. The outcomes of burnout are poor quality care, poor patient safety, adverse events, patient negative experience, patient falls, medication errors, and intention to leave.

Strategies Used To Address Nursing Burnout

To reduce the incidences of burnout in nursing, the healthcare leadership should train leaders to recognize and address burnout, improve nurse to patient ratios, include nurses in policy discussions, implement support programs, involve nurses in scheduling, and reduce non-clinical tasks (Kennedy, J. M., & Eldredge, D. 2021). Training leaders in recognizing and addressing burnout familiarizes them with the signs of an employee experiencing burnout. It will help them address the issue and intervene to support their staff before it becomes a serious issue. Improving nurse to patient ratio reduces emotional exhaustion. It includes reducing the nurse-to-patient ratio to1:4 by adding staff. It will increase patient satisfaction, decrease poor outcomes and readmissions, and high nurse turnover. Including nurses in policy discussions help to reduce emotional exhaustion, making decisions about their work hence, decreasing burnout. They also feel they have control and the autonomy of their work that increases the motivation to work and retain their working staff. Implementing support programs in an organization helps the nursing staff cope with the pressure associated with their work. The support program listens to the nurse’s needs and implements their strategies to find solutions to their needs. Involving nurses in scheduling the working program help to balance between the working hours and the resting hours. This helps to reduce fatigue and have a better work-life balance. Nurses often engage in non-clinical staff such as discharge follow-up, monitoring, preventive-visit scheduling, and connecting patients with community resources. Reducing non-clinical tasks for nurses will depressurize a nurse’s workload and allow them to focus on valuable clinical duties. Work Overload And Nursing Burnout Due Paper

Impact Of The Strategies On The Organization

In our organization, most of the nights on the job, I felt unable to provide the best quality of care because of the few staff and the high job demand. We worked for long hours during the day and few resting hours. As a result, I always felt exhausted and demotivated to work. The patient always complained of poor quality of care. The strategies described in the peer-reviewed articles would help our organization in improving the quality of care through patient safety practices. Increasing the nursing staff will ensure there is quality care according to the patient. Creating a positive and supportive work environment will reduce job-related stress and improve work-life balance. These strategies will help the nurses to prioritize their work. For example, nurses will focus more or prioritize the clinical tasks and leave non-clinical work to the support staff. When nurses are left to make work decisions, they will support better time management practices. For example, they will arrive to work early, create a to-do list systematically, and delegate tasks to work as a team. This strategy will reduce nursing burnout and work overload. These strategies will negatively impact the organization by increasing the cost of running the organization. Medical cost is already expensive hiring more nurses increases the cost of salaries, therefore increasing the total operational cost of the organization.
